Biggest problem with unpaved, heavily used trails is erosion.  They quickly turn into gullies and “canyons” which can be dangerous for intermediate riders and pedestrians.

Personally, considering the light weight nature of trail users, I would prefer permeable concrete but the expense is prohibitive.</description>
