John,
Great post, and thanks for sharing this with the staff of the Downtown Denver Partnership. We're always interested in the opinions of those who are new to our city.

If anyone is looking for additional information on Downtown Denver, I highly encourage them to check out www.DowntownDenver.com. If you're specifically interested in the 16th Street Mall, check out www.16thStreetPlan.com to learn how we'll soon be updating this pedestrian and transit spine.

Best,
Sarah

Glad you got to visit Denver! I grew up there in the 70's when they were just starting the Greenbelt along the Platte river.

That whole area was a industrial wasteland much like a few miles just N. of Downtown. Shows you anything is possible with some imagination and core group of people committed to improving an area.

Their downtown skate park is a hive of activity. Thanks for sharing your trip.

No photos because I didn't expect it to be that cool and was unprepared. Tried to compensate with hyperlinks.

I think Memphians will be intriqued with the idea of a successfull pedstrian mall, a trolley/shuttle system that is both free and fast, a vibrant/growing downtown business scene and knowledgable ambassadors staffing what are likely low-wage jobs.

We so often hear about San Francisco or other very large cities. It is hard to compare or gain inspiration from something so different. The city of Denver is slightly smaller than Memphis, while the MSA is twice as large (but not giant). It is something sort-of relative to think about.

It was unseasonably mild... probably in the 30s when we arrived and upper 40s in the afternoon. I was still wearing long-johns and a ski-coat. Most people had on sweaters and jackets. One crazy couple had on shorts and t-shirts.

I think some places are populated by people willing to brave it. In NYC, Chicago & Boston, people walk through blizzards. In South Beach people dine at sidewalk cafes through 100 degree summers. But in all of those instances, there is somewhere interesting to go within walking distance of a lot of people. They never had to adopt (or break from) a car culture. And a car in those places would be a strange luxury.

I have no idea what has inspired this in Denver because they are not historically an urban people. That is what made it so neat.

why don't you have photos with this post? I'd really like to see the places you are comparing. Also, though interesting, I don't think that you are saying anything too radical here in your Memphis compare and suggest, or maybe I'm missing the point.

Do you think the weather often changes pedestrian traffic or are Denver residents more willing to brave inclement weather? And what was the temperture range while y'all were there?
